Will I lose all the extra weight? · Studies show that patients may lose up to 60% of excess body weight after bariatric surgery. This percentage can vary depending on the procedure (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric banding, or sleeve gastrectomy) and your associated medical conditions.
· You might keep losing weight for 2-3 years after surgery or it might fluctuate with periods of weight gain followed by weight loss.
What else can I expect?
Nothing will improve overnight! It’s not like we know Magic!
But yes, slowly, and surely your health will get better.
- Type 2 Diabetes improves in 92% of cases, allowing you to cut down, or stop your diabetes medicines following surgery.
- An improvement in High blood pressure is seen in 75% of cases, cholesterol levels in 76% of cases, and cardiovascular diseases in 58% of cases within 6 months of Bariatric Surgery.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) gets better in 96% of cases.
- PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), menstrual irregularities and fertility problems resolve as your hormonal levels get back to normal.
- Losing excess weight gives your emotional health and quality of life a boost and you feel healthier and happier!
How much time will it take to recover from surgery?
· Most of the procedures are laparoscopic which would mean that you will be able to go home 2-3 days after the surgery.
· But it might take up to 6 weeks (about 1 and a half months) for you to be able to get back to your normal routine. So, be prepared to take a couple of weeks off from work.
· Also, there will be strict dietary restrictions for you just after the surgery. You might be put on a liquid diet a couple of days after surgery and then slowly transition into solid food.
Is it safe? The American Society for Bariatrics & Metabolic Surgery has reported that Bariatric surgery is as safe as some of the most common surgeries in America (like appendectomy, gallbladder surgery and knee replacement).
The risk of death is as low as 0.1% and the chances of a major complication is about 4%.

- Constipation is common after weight loss surgery.
- Vomiting and food intolerance may also occur.
- Dumping syndrome- It happens after eating foods high in sugar (like Sodas or fruit juices). As the sugary food rushes through the stomach, it can cause nausea, vomiting, and weakness. It usually subsides with time, but you need to be cautious and monitor what you eat.
- Gallstones are common.
Serious side effects include:
- Bleeding in stool
- Blood in vomit
- Hernia
- Bowel obstruction

If you feel dizzy or have blood in stools or vomit or any associated symptoms a few days after surgery, call your doctor.
How long will I need follow-up sessions?
You will need diet and nutrition counseling for at least 1-2 years following the surgery.
Also, you will have to attend regular follow-up sessions with our exercise therapist and psychologists to assess and monitor your physical and mental health.
