What is Obesity?

Obesity is a disease that involves an excessive amount of body fat. This increases your risk of other health problems. Like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoarthritis and gout, high level of cholesterol, and many others. Obesity can also affect children as well as adults.

There are many factors that can contribute to excessive weight gains such as eating habits, bad sleeping patterns, and lack of physical activity. Being fond of eating junk food especially fast-food meals, processed meats and sugary drinks and too much alcohol consumption are contributors to obesity.

Other factors resulting in obesity are your family history or genetics, your metabolism or your body’s ability to process food into energy, and certain medical conditions that cause weight gains such as hypothyroidism and hormonal imbalance. Certain medications also contribute to weight gains, such as antidepressants, beta-blockers, and antihistamines.

Managing Obesity

Unfortunately, there is no “short-cut” treatment for obesity. You must learn how to control your eating habits and change your diet altogether. Choose healthier food choices such as vegetables and fruit. Eating whole foods is a good start to a healthy diet.

Increased physical activity is also important in managing obesity. You could start with simple cardio exercises like walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming. You don’t need to go to the gym to boost your physical activity. Doing simple exercises is better than doing nothing.

If you find it hard to lose weight after following a healthy diet and increasing your physical activity, it might be better to seek professional help. Talking to a medical provider may help you achieve your goals and manage your weight. Your doctor can refer you to all the different treatments that could help you in managing your condition. Some of these choices are counseling and therapy, prescription medicines, or even weight-loss surgery.
